Did you know of Pianopoli artwork now at Eisenhower Museun in USA?
Giuseppe Casale born in Pianopoli 21 July 1889 and died in Pianopoli 13 January 1974, he was known as "the woodcarver" Since there was another Giuseppe Casale, younger, also a woodcarver.
Giuseppe Casale nato a Pianopoli il 21 Luglio 1889 - morto a Pianopoli il 13 Gennaio 1974, conosciuto come L'intagliatore Casale perchè unaltro Giuseppe Casale, molto più giovane, faceva l'intagliatore.
Plaque of General Eisenhower, who became 34th President of United States serving from 1953 to 1961.
Pianopoli Giuseppe Casale carved the wooden plaque of General Eisenhower about 1945-1946.
His dream was to sent it directly to the General office in USA. That dream became a reality in 1949.
Ralph Maida is holding the plaque that he brought from Pianopoli to USA in 1949. The plaque was carved by Giuseppe Casale (woodcarver) in 1946. Ralph Maida and Pat Maida scheduled an appointment and brought it to General Eisenhower at Columbia University. Newspaper article was printed in the Hartford Times (no longer in existence) on August 28, 1949 by Morton J. Boardman.

Pasquale Maida born in Pianopoli 29January 1929, emigrated to Herkimer, New York in May 1936 with mother and sister Caterina (now married Sciortino) He Served U.S. Army, participated World War II- Married to Eleonora Guzzo also from Pianopoli. Opened a Minimarket in Hartford Ct. , owner and operated for several years untill his retirement.

Pianopoli Descendant Participating Miss Italy
ALBANY NY –Celebrate different cultures from around the world at the 37th Annual Festival of Nations! Food, arts, crafts and groups from over 20 different nations will be represented on October 26, 2008 at this diversity celebration at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center.
Who will be crowned Miss Festival of Nations? All lovely contestants between the ages of 14 and 18 were chosen by their participating nations to represent their country. The 2008 Miss Festival of Nations will be crowned at the event, co-hosted by Albany Tulip Queen Sarah Volk

Alexandra Tebano daughter of Novella (Mastroianni) Tebano, is representating Italy as Miss Italy in the Festival of Nations held in Albany, New York.
For Pianopoletani, It is an honor to be chosen to represent Italy. 28 Nations are participating competition is keen but she is so personable, smart and a nice looking girl so she has a good chance of winning as Miss Festival of Nations.
Novella Mastroianni and family (Zigrino Totonno) came from Pianopoli, in 1968 and lived since in Schenectady.

During 1900's and to 1960 a high number of families from the town of Pianopoli, providence of Catanzaro, Italy emigrated to Herkimer, N.Y. for jobs at Standard Furniture Company. Records shows that up to 1929, the request was so high that Pianopoli people who already working in Herkimer, had offered themselfs to sponsor immigrant and family members, relatives and friends that would accept jobs at Standard Furniture Co. in Herkimer. Herkimer Standard Furniture Co.The Company founded in 1886, was located on South Washington St. and King Street It was red brick buildings with land extending to Route 5. and having the railroad extended to the loading dock. From the West Canda Creek to Mirrow lake a water canal was created to generate electricity for the factory.
After the WWII, extra people were added to the Standard Furniture Co. workforce therefore, again a number of workers from Pianopoli emigrated to Herkimer, .My father, Agostino Faga, arrived in Herkimer in 1954, worked at the Standard for several years at several production jobs. He then was assigned to the night shift at the boiler room maintenance in addition doing watchman performances with the key-clock that had to be marked during routine controlling at all floors and all departments.When business declined, my father was laid-off and was offered an eletrician job at the Library Bureau Co. where he then retired

It was the largest wooden furniture in Herkimer that produced office equipment; desks, library cabinet, bookcases, chairs, tables, custom made conference tables ect..The furniture made by experienced craftsman had a fine hand-rubbed finished that made the product the best in the marked.
Their craftsmanship was so well known throughout the world that business was booming and extra people were added to the workforce mainly during the WWII years as thousands of desks were produced for the government..
Many European immigrant arrived in Herkimer a high percentage they all worked at the Standard Furniture.

Dear Mr. Iacocca,
Some time ago I received an invitation, through American Express to join other Americans in honoring famìly members through the Ellis Island American Immigrant Wall of Honor.
I am sincerely hoping that the invitatíon is still open - my famìly bas taken up a collectìon in order to honor four of our family members who originally came from Italy to the U.S. via Ellis Island many years ago. They came to this country, and built a large and wonderful family and family business in fulfillment of the "American Dream" that they shared with so many of their fellow immigrants. I don't want to merely send you their names and $400 - I feel inclined to briefly tell you their story as well.
My grandfather, Gíuseppe Francesco ("Joseph") Aiello, came to America way of Ellis Island, in 1920. He came from Pianopoli, (Providence of Catanzaro) Italy (south of Naples) with the intention of seeking a new and better life for himself and his family. He settled in the small town of Herkimer, New York. He began in business by peddling fresh fruits and vegetables from a walking cart. When he had enough money, he sent for his wífe, Maria Stella Fazio Aiello, his infant daughter. Franceschina Clorinda Aiello, and his mother, Francesca Nanci who had remained behind in Italy. They arrived at Ellis Island in 1922
Joseph purchased a parcel of property which included the large famíly family house with a modestly sized store front, and began a small famíly grocery buisiness.
He and his wife Maria Stella. had five other children (besídes Franceschina) Thomas (now deceased), Francis, Anthony (my father), Angelina, and Joseph, who became a, naturalized, American cítizen, was joined in the business by his children. The business grew into a sizable and modestly successful supermarket and laundromat enterprìse, in addition to expand estate holdings, all of whích became part of the town's prime commercil district..
All of the Aiello children, except Franceschina ("Chick"), married and produced fifteen grandchildren, most of whom were also raised in the bus:iness.
Maria Stella died in 1964. Joseph continued to work in the busíness, in partnership with, his children, until his death. in 1973 at age of 76. He died of a heart attack while engagíng in one of most favorite hobbies: while picking wild mushrooms in the woods. Their children continue to reside in Herkimer. They recently retired from the supermarket business, mantaining a small meat market and laundromat, and renting the remaínder of the stite to a drugstore and a clothing store. The income from the Joseph Aiello Realty Corp. provides for their retirement.
The fifteen grandchildren reside in various areas of the U.S. (with one in Germany), and are successful in a variety of occupations. Twelve of them are married and have produced twelve great-grandchildren (plus two on the way) bringing the Joseph Aiello family count in the U.S. to a current total of 53 (including myself), his wife, mother, children and their spouses, grandchildren and their spouses, and great-granchildren).
We are a very close family and continue to have family reunions every Christmas (as well as at weddings and showers). While we continue to celebrate many of the old-country Italian traditions that we learned from Joseph and Maria Stella, we also continue to fully live the "American Dream" that he belived in and made come true for himself and his family. His strong beliefs became the foundation values upon which the Aiello family continue to built - those of optimistic faith, honesty, self'reliance, hard work, and kindness towards one's neighbors.
Thank you this chance to honor the four individuals who zeised and embraced the American opportunicty whe they ventured to Ellis Island.
The Aiello's are proud to be part of the Ellis Island commemorative and the legacy it represents.

Joe Aiello, A dream that came true.
During his life in Herkimer, he has alwasy talked about the hometown Pianopoli. All of his Pianopoletans friends when together, they always had something to say "good and bad" of Pianopoli. The bad part was spoken by the ones who emigrated before the WWII as Pianopoli only work was farming who had the land. Houses were small, old and several very crowded with large family members. Before 1925 had no electricity, no running water and or toilets, bathrooms at homes. The good part was publicized by the emigrants who arrived in the 1960's and beyond as after the 1950's the economy went high as people were working in the modernized indusstries, therefore new modern homes were built with all the conforts, people could afford to purchase a small car ect..
I remember Joe saying that after retirement, he wanted to visit Pianopoli but first he wanted to visit Brazil, South America serching for his relatives..
In July 1972 Joe's dream came true, He finally made the trip visiting Italian cities and Pianopoli.
He was highly welcomed by all relatives, as well long time friends and many friends who had returned back to Pianopoli.
His comments was; If someone had told me how Pianopoli had changed since I emigrated, I would had not belive it... Yes, Pianopoli has changes so much to the best ever and if God wants, I will be back again next year for a longer visit.
His stay was untill after Pianopoli main feast of Madonna Addolorata that he was so devoted.
In the days prior to the feast two of his doughters and relatives from Herkimer arrived in Pianopoli to enjoy the devoted feast.
While in Pianopoli, Myself (Joe Faga) Domenico Ceneviva, and Mario Lupica who had returned back to Pianopoli from Herkimer, invite Joe at Mario's beach home.. see photos below...
The following year in September 1973, we received the sad news of Joe Aiello death.

La prima BANDA MUSICALE di Pianopoli si costituì nel 1893 per opera del maestro Erminio Papa e con la
collaborazione del farmacista Agostino Barberio.
Con 15 giovani del luogo l’intraprendente maestro cominciò a fare lezioni. Dopo alcuni mesi si aggrerarono tanti altri giovani e così si decise di costituire una vera e propria banda che restò in vita per alcuni decenni.
Nel 1895 la banda di Pianopoli contava 26 giovani e guidati dal nuovo mastro Pasquale Sorrentino si esibirono r la prima volta in forma ufficiale nella piazza del paese.

Pianopoli’s first musical band was formed in 1893 through the efforts of Maestro Erminio Papa and the collaboration of the pharmacist Agostino Barberio.
The enterprising maestro began giving lessons to 15 local youths. After a few months, many other young people joined, and it was decided to establish a proper band, which remained active for several decades.
By 1895, the Pianopoli band comprised 26 young musicians; led by their new maestro, Pasquale Sorrentino, they performed officially for the first time in the town square.
